C’era una volta una bambina, di nome Samìa, che veniva da un Paese lontano, dove regnava la guerra e non c’era da mangiare. Samìa era una piccola  profuga dai capelli crespi e la pelle scura.

Nel suo Paese non si festeggiava il Natale perciò lei proprio non sapeva cosa fosse e, quindi, per saperne di più, andò a fare una passeggiata.

Le strade erano tutte illuminate! Alcune vetrine erano piene di bei dolci a forma di pino o di omini vestiti di zucchero. Altre erano piene di giocattoli e altre ancora di oggetti di vario tipo. Per non parlare di tutti i negozi di piante pieni di abeti, di tutte le misure, pronti per essere venduti ed addobbati. Tutti, comunque, si affannavano a comprare e a farsi fare le confezioni regalo.

Sinceramente Samìa non capiva proprio perché la gente volesse per forza comprare tutte quelle cose per lei inutili, cosa c’entravano con il Natale? Non seppe darsi una risposta e, quindi, tornò a casa sconsolata e con le idee sempre meno chiare.

I primi giorni di dicembre la maestra di Samìa invitò i bambini a decorare una ghirlanda di rami di pino dando loro noci, una vernice dorata e quattro candele rosse, posizionate intorno, che rappresentavano le 4 settimane dell’Avvento.

“Che bella!” gridarono tutti alla fine del lavoro. La maestra disse: “Ora possiamo accendere la prima”.

“Oh mamma mia! Avvento?” Samìa non aveva mai sentito nemmeno questa parola ma, almeno, aveva capito che era legata al Natale.

A quel punto decise di farsi coraggio e chiese: “Maestra, ma cosa è il Natale?”. La maestra decise di farlo spiegare ai compagni.

Anna disse: “E’ Natale quando decoriamo la casa”; Federica disse: “E’ Natale quando la mamma prepara un sacco di dolci!”; Andrea disse: “E’ Natale quando posso scrivere la lettera dei regali che voglio a Babbo Natale”; Chiara disse: “E’ Natale quando andiamo in vacanza”; Francesco disse: “E’ Natale quando mi regalano il pallone nuovo”; Ginevra disse: “E’ Natale quando arriva Babbo Natale”; Giorgia disse:“ E’ Natale quando vado a trovare i nonni che vivono in un’altra città”; Azzurra disse: “E’ Natale quando addobbiamo tutti insieme l’albero con oggetti di tanti colori”.

Niente da fare: Samìa non riusciva ancora a capire molto di questo Natale, di tutta questa gioia nei suoi compagni e, quindi, si scoraggiò convinta di non poter mai far parte di questo Natale.

La maestra, che aveva percepito il disagio di Samìa, intervenne dicendo: “per me è Natale quando tutti insieme rappresentiamo la storia della nascita di Gesù, con Maria e Giuseppe alle prese con l’oste cattivo che rifiutò loro un posto per dormire nella sua locanda e la sofferta decisione di fermarsi in una fredda grotta. Soprattutto, però, la storia di una stella brillante con una lunga coda che, dalle lontane terre d’Oriente, con la sua luce, guidò i Re Magi verso la grotta di Betlemme. Proprio uno dei Re Magi, Melchiorre, come ricorderete, aveva la pelle scura come Samìa. Direi che quest’anno, quindi, per la recita non avremo problemi a trovare il nostro Melchiorre!”.

A quel punto Lorenzo, il bambino che sedeva accanto a Samìa, la guardò in silenzio e, con delicatezza, appoggiò la mano sui suoi capelli crespi, come per farle una carezza, e disse: “Samìa, avrai un ruolo importante nella recita ma non preoccuparti, ti aiuteremo tutti”.

Samìa nel sentire queste parole provò una bellissima emozione ed esclamò: “Adesso ho capito! Natale è quando sento il mio cuore battere di felicità come in questo momento!”.
